There’s nothing like the shade of a big tree on a hot summer day to bring relief and comfort. Did you know, though, that you can get the same kind of effect on your home? There’s a term called “landscape shading” that is used to describe purposely planting trees, shrubs, or other plants close by a home with the intent of using the shade from them to keep your home cool.
This can be very effective in the summertime! Trees, in particular, prevent solar heat from being absorbed by your windows and roof, and give off cooling water vapor. Air temperatures directly under trees can be up to 25 degrees cooler than the air temperatures directly above blacktop with direct sun exposure. In some cases, you might get up to 10% savings off your yearly energy bill thanks to landscape shading. Of course, some troubles can come from having trees or other landscaping very close to a home, so make sure to do some careful planning.
