Tripping and falling on a cracked walkway can be a very painful, even a life-threatening event, especially so for older people. Unfortunately, it is difficult to keep your walkways from cracking. Cement doesn’t deal well with shifts in the surface it rests on, and there are many different reasons why this might happen. It could be from tree roots growing underneath the surface pushing up on the cement, it could be from temperature changes causing the ground to expand and retract, or it could be from poor installation.
When this happens, the conclusion might be that you need to rip out the old cement and have a new walkway poured, which will be disruptive and expensive, but there is also an option called mudjacking.
Mudjacking is performed by drilling holes in the existing cement and then pumping in a mixture of cement, water and dirt to level out the walkway. This is much simpler and less costly than other methods.
