Tornado season is always a worrying time. While there are areas of the country where they are much more likely than others, they can theoretically show up in unexpected places. The safety of you and your family are dependent on knowing how to act in case you find yourself in the path of a tornado. While you can get fairly early warning when there is a high risk of tornadoes, do you know what areas of your home are safest?
Structural integrity is very important to consider. If you live in a mobile home or a trailer, your safest bet is to find shelter at a different location, since a powerful tornado can pick up your whole home.
If you have a home with a basement, that would usually be the safest place to be, but if you don’t have one, the space underneath a staircase or an inner room can provide fairly good shelter, as can your bathroom.
