Many of us use being struck by lightning as a metaphor for something unlikely, and it certainly isn’t something that the majority of us has ever experienced, but I’m sure that you would like to keep it that way, and the same goes for your home.

Annually about 50 people die from lightning strikes. The chance of lightning doing damage to your home is however much greater. There is the risk of surges travelling through power or cable lines and damaging your electronics, and even starting a fire. There is also the risk that lightning will strike your home directly and start a fire.

Your home is likely equipped with a lightning rod which will conduct the lightning strike away from your it, but this doesn’t mean that you aren’t at risk when there is a lightning storm.

If lightning were to hit a tree near your home, it could catch on fire or fall in such a way that your home is damaged..

To protect yourself during a lightning storm, do not use any electric appliances, and if you are worried about them being damaged, unplug them from the outlets.
