Homeowners that have a septic system have an additional responsibility or they might find themselves with a failing septic system, possibly causing sewage to back up into the house. It is recommended to have your tank pumped at least once every five years, but more often if you have a large family or a small tank. If this isn’t done, your leach field could fail which can get quite costly to fix. You should also have it inspected every 3 years or so to make sure you catch any issues that might be brewing.
You should never allow a vehicle to drive on top of the tank or park there since they could damage the sensitive mechanism of the septic tank.
It is also important to consider what you put into your septic tank. Some chemicals can kill the bacteria that keep the balance in the tank, and if you flush down things that don’t break down, your tank will fill up quicker than normal.
