If you live in a low lying area, or where it is very flat, and you get heavy downpours, you might need a sump pump. A sump pump’s purpose is to keep water from seeping into your basement. This could be from the ground water level rising, or runoff from around your house making it into your basement.
This pump will be installed in the lowest part of your basement, and whenever it senses that the water level is rising, it will start to pump it out through a pipe that funnels it away from your house. If you have a finished basement, this is especially important, since a flooded basement could be very expensive to restore.
To test if your existing pump works properly, you can pour some water into the trench where it is located and check if the pump starts up. Keep your pump in good repair and clean it regularly. On average, they have a life-span of ten years, and sometimes even longer if they are well maintained.
