Do you use surge protectors to keep the major appliances in your home safe from electrical damage? Surge protectors are very important. How do they work? If the flow of electricity looks like a constant wave of peaks and valleys, a power surge or spike would look like one of those peaks going a lot higher than the rest of them. Even nanoseconds of electrical voltage past a certain level can cause significant damage to most electronics. Surge protectors take that excess voltage and divert it to ground, leveling out the peaks in the flow of electricity.
There are a lot of different things that can cause a power surge or spike. We’re probably the most familiar with lightning strikes, but surges and spikes can also be caused by faulty wiring, issues with utility company equipment, or downed power lines. They can even happen if some high-power devices like air conditioners and refrigerators are suddenly turned on or off.
