One of the earliest manufactured roofing materials is clay roofing, and still today, it is commonly in use. In fact, some of the clay roofs that you see today could have been around when your grandparents were kids. Since clay lasts such a long time, it is definitely an investment that pays for itself over time, but it does have a quite high initial cost. The cost does not only involve the material itself. Since clay tiles are much heavier than other materials, the existing framing on your home might need to be reinforced to carry that extra weight.
It is also very important to have the tiles installed by an experienced roofer. If installed improperly, they could clatter in the wind because of hitting each other. Your tiles must be made for the climate in which you live. If you install the wrong type of tiles, they could disintegrate in as little as one year’s time.
