Every system in your home has a weak spot, one that is more likely to fail or cause you some kind of trouble. For your HVAC system, that weak spot is the ductwork that goes throughout your home. With so many places where it could fail, it is difficult to keep an eye on it, but it can end up costing you quite a bit of money in energy bills if you have a leaking HVAC system. What will happen is that the air from your HVAC unit leaks out into areas of your home that aren’t in need of hot or cold air, and it will pull back in the air from those areas, as well as, any smells or odors that contaminate the air that you breathe. Using a smoke pen, you might be able to spot places where the ductwork is leaking, and the same is possible using a thermal imaging camera. The most likely spot for the system to start leaking is near the HVAC unit itself, since the pressure is higher there, but any joints throughout the ductwork are also possible weak spots.
