Many people today wish to live off the grid, having their utilities provided for without relying on any public services. While the reasons for doing this differ, everyone has the same basic needs, including power, food, water and shelter. Gaining access to running water might be one of the tougher tasks depending on the area where you live, which is why some have turned to a rainwater catchment system.
There are many different types of systems that can range from the very basic, involving a barrel for collecting rainwater to be used to water crops, to a more complicated system that is used for filling the toilet tank and washing clothes. However, if the water is going to be used as drinking, or potable water, it will need to be filtered and purified, otherwise it could cause disease.
You want to be careful to not collect water from any surface that would release dangerous chemicals into your water, such as roofs that have lead paint.
