Have you ever turned on the hot water and had water come out that was so hot it hurt? If you consider that some water heaters put out water that is as hot as 160 degrees, then you can understand how that could happen. Of course, you’re not supposed to get water that hot to the faucet, especially since it only takes a few seconds to get scalded with water that hot.
This is why there should be an anti-scald valve installed in your home. They function by mixing the cold and hot water that is coming in together to achieve a more comfortable temperature. If you have elderly parents living with you who have sensitive skin and slower reaction time, it is a really good idea to make sure you have one and that it functions properly, otherwise they could get badly hurt. The same is true for young children. They could turn on the hot water and stick their hands under it without thinking and get hurt.
