For some homeowners, getting into the attic requires pulling down a ladder and climbing it. This is a common space-saving design choice, but it does bring with it some unique challenges. Since an attic pull-down ladder is mounted in between the wooden frame, it is important that it has been firmly attached. It needs to be able to hold up the combined weight of the ladder with its mechanism, the person climbing the ladder and anything that he would be carrying. It is also important that the ladder is the correct length. If the ladder is too short, it might be difficult to climb, but a ladder that is too long runs the risk of having too much pressure put on the hinges where it folds out, causing it to break.
When using an attic ladder, it is wise to avoid climbing it with too heavy a load. If at all possible, you should have someone help you by handing items to you after you have climbed it.
