One of the most common causes for energy loss in an older home are your windows. Whether you are trying to keep the cool air inside your home in the summertime or the cold outside in the wintertime, spending some time and money on making sure your windows are in good shape is a very wise investment.
If your windows have wooden frames, rot or cracks might be letting air escape. To fix a problem with rot, you will first need to remove all the old wood that has been affected by it. Missing just a small portion of unhealthy wood will allow the rot to take hold once again, and the problem will resurface.
After every trace of rotten wood has been removed, you can restore the wood using epoxy wood filler. After this has set, you need to sand it down and apply a layer of paint. If you do a good job, no one will be able to tell it was once in disrepair.
For cracks around the window, you can use caulk and weatherstripping to seal them.
Taking care of your windows is a much cheaper alternative than buying and installing your windows; just make sure that you take care of the problem as soon as possible.
