Windows with two panes of glass do a very good job of saving energy. And as a homeowner, you know that energy saved equals money saved. Double-paned windows are effective because they essentially add three layers of protection against the cold and heat of external temperatures. The glass itself accounts for two of the layers, but the third layer is that of a special gas that lives between the glass layers, preventing condensation and energy transfer.
If there’s a crack or gap in the seal of a window, that gas can escape. Sometimes it’s easy to tell from where the gas is escaping, since condensation can form between the glass panes. More often than not, though, identifying the issue can be difficult. Fortunately, a home inspection that includes thermal imaging can help you easily identify issues like these, since the infrared camera clearly displays changes in the temperature surrounding and penetrating the windows.
