Between 1930 and 1950, many houses were made with asbestos installation. Use was discontinued when it was realized that the fibers from asbestos could cause serious damage to the respiratory system, possibly even lung cancer. Unfortunately, some homeowners are unaware that they have a potential health risk in their attic. What is worse, some have unwittingly exposed themselves to asbestos when doing home remodelling.
If you become aware that you have asbestos in your home, never try to remove it yourself. Disturbing asbestos will only release fibers into the air, and moving it through your home, you risk to spread fibers throughout the house.
There are many companies that specialize in asbestos removal, and they have the tools and experience to do so safely.
You should be able to recognize asbestos insulation by the way it looks. The most common type will look like gray wool or pebbles with metal streaks.
