Sometimes when I am on a home inspection I see some strange things. While caulking on a drain pipe is not the strangest thing I have ever seen, it is something that I wanted to use as an object lesson.
As we look at the picture to the left, we see that someone attached the drain line with the proper fitting, but caulked the top of it instead of tightening it down more (it had a lot more room for tightening). It is an easy fix, but it shows something to a home inspector – if someone was willing to do that right where I could see it, what else could they have “repaired” that way too.
As a home inspector, I want to believe everyone. But I like to “Trust but verify”. When I see things like this, it makes me look even closer.
