There are many different options for roofing materials. One of them is asphalt shingles. You can recognize them as gray tiles in different shades.
Sometimes moss or mold will start growing on these types of roofs. This can be a serious problem that could do costly damage to your roof.
On older roofs, the surface material on the shingles could wear off. This usually doesn’t happen unless it is over 15 years old. When the surface material is worn off, the asphalt base becomes visible, and at that point, the only solution is to replace the roof.
It is also possible that stains on your roof are due to algae growth. This is not as serious as mold or moss, but it will still be very unsightly.
Moss and algae can be cleaned off with a solution consisting of equal parts water and bleach.
You can prevent growth by making sure that your roof isn’t shaded by nearby trees, and that there are no locations where water is retained on top of the roofing material due to leaves or branches.
