As a homeowner, your honey-do or to-do list is probably a mile long! However, one of the simple tasks that should be included in that list is water heater maintenance. Just a couple of easy steps can potentially help save you hundreds of dollars in costly repairs.
For one thing, you might be able to turn down the temperature on your water heater. Typically, manufacturers set the temperature of new water heaters to about 140 degrees. The minimum temperature of a water heater is 120 degrees (to prevent microbe growth) so you’ve got some wiggle room.
Another thing you can do is to flush a few gallons of water out of the tank. This will help get rid of some of the sediment that builds up at the bottom, which will help the heater run more efficiently. Just open the drain at the bottom into a bucket a few times, and you’ll be in business.
