If you have never used a dishwasher, you might not be aware that it uses a special type of soap that is made for dishwashers. It will often come in tablets, while some use powder. The reason for this is that regular dish soap will foam up excessively when used in a dishwasher. In fact, if you were to use dish soap in your dishwasher, you would probably see foam coming out at the seams after the machine has run for a while. This is a major problem and will require a lot of work to fix, but don’t worry, your machine isn’t ruined.
First, make sure you stop the machine right away when you realize you put the wrong soap in, since the problem will get worse if the machine keeps running. Remove everything from inside the machine and rinse it off in your sink. If you have access to a wet vac, use that to remove any water and soap inside the machine. After this, run a quick rinse using just water and then repeat the process. It will usually take a few rinses before the machine stops foaming.
